VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL
|
| This year’s joint VBS (shared with First Presbyterian Church and
Antioch Lutheran Church) will transform First Presbyterian Church’s Fellowship Hall into the courts and streets of ancient Egypt, as students have a “YOU ARE THERE” week of experiences drawn from the Old Testament stories of Joseph, the dreamer sold into slavery in Egypt, who rose to become the Pharaoh’s trusted advisor and saved the Israelites. As children in Kindergarten-grade 5 move through the marketplace, they’ll make Egyptian style instruments, hieroglyph plaques, canopic jars and other ancient treasures; they’ll also see and hear the story of Jacob unfold in the marketplace, during game time, in group singing, and “tribe time” when they’ll be able to reflect on the experience.

BOOK GROUP
|
| The North Church Book Discussion group will not meet in July; our next gathering will be on Thursday, August 19, 7:30 p.m. Because there’s extra time, we have two books to read and discuss: Stones into Schools: Promoting Peace with Books, not Stones, in Afghanistan and Pakistan by Greg Mortensen. This book follows Mortensen’s popular “Three Cups of Tea” and chronicles how Mortensen’s Central Asia Institute has expanded its campaign to promote learning (particularly for girls) into Afghanistan
and the rest of Pakistan.
The second book is The Help, by Kathryn Stockett, a novel that chronicles the fascinating and complex relationships between the members of a household: the country-clubbing owners of the house and their African-American servants. Set at the time of the start of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960’s, this book is driven by powerful and compelling characters.
We are unable to get copies of either book to loan from the church, but both titles are widely available at libraries and for purchase.
