The Plarn Group meets once a month on the third Wednesday from 2:15 p.m. until 3:30-4:00 p.m. Plarn is “yarn” made out of plastic bags (i.e., Kroger, Meijer, CVS, etc.), which are flattened, cut into strips, looped together and then knitted or crocheted into 4ft X 6ft sleeping mats for the homeless. They are distributed in downtown Detroit by clergy from an ecumenical group called “Songs and Spirits.”
It is not necessary to know how to knit or crochet, although we love finding people with those skills. We usually spend the time cutting the bags and looping the strips together while we chat. Most of the mats are actually made at home by people who can knit/crochet.
We happily welcome both members and non-members of the Church to join us in this project, even if it is just to learn more about it. If you are unable to attend the meetings, but are interested in making a mat, we will supply you with the instructions and the balls of plarn (contact the Church office).
Church Office: (248) 848-1750 All are welcome.
